RE Hydrogen and Flextricity Ltd ( will undertake a grid balancing field trial using their electrolyser to provide Short Term Operating Reserve service to National Grid. This will be the UK’s first such field trial where electrolytic hydrogen plays a critical role for the National Grid. RE Hydrogen has secured commercialisation funding from Finance South East Ltd for this field trial. The aim of this project is to establish RE Hydrogen’s highly responsive dynamic electrolysers for real world commercial applications. Successful demonstration of the electrolyser and its interface with electricity grid will potentially lead to adoption of MW scale electrolyser for this applcation. The by-product hydrogen will potentially be fed back to the grid by hydrogen gas engines and the by-product heat will be supplied to a nearby warehouse onsite at RE Hydrogen’s facility.
